Sidebar Gadgets Disabled when UAC is Turned Off in Windows 7 Beta

Came across another solution to a problem I encountered using the Windows 7 Beta: when the UAC is turned off (sometimes you just need to) and the system is rebooted, Sidebar doesn’t doesn’t turn on and the gadgets don’t show. The blog at My Digital Life showed two solutions, one involving replacing the Sidebar executable with the Vista version (yuck!) and the other elevating the Sidebar process which to me is more acceptable and enlightening.

In summary, set the value of the AllowElevatedProcess registry key located at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings to “1”. If you don’t find the key there then create it as a DWORD first and then set it to “1”.
